Composting
Compost Material Available
City of Leduc residents have access to all finished compost material located at the compost facility at no charge beginning later this spring. Please continue to check back to this page for updates on when the compost will become available.
The compost will be placed outside the gate to the compost material collection site (west of the Public Services Shop) and is available to residents on a first come first serve basis.
Residents are asked to limit the amount of material they take to no more than five full 5 gallon pails (113.5 litres total). This is to ensure that as many residents as possible have access to the material.
This giveaway is only for City of Leduc residents for their personal use (please, no commercial users) and will last until all the material is gone.
Thank you to all “composting” participants who have made this program possible by contributing their grass clippings and flower bed/garden waste.
This program is supported by the Leduc Environmental Advisory Board.
Composting is a process where organic materials such as yard wastes are broken down through the action of micro-organisms into a soil-like material called humus.
Why Compost Yard Waste?
The City of Leduc produces over 1,500 metric tonnes of compostable yard waste each year. Disposal of this amount of waste costs the City thousands of dollars annually.
The focus has therefore shifted to alternate methods of conserving and extending the use of precious landfill space. These alternative methods include recycling and composting. By composting back yard organic waste, the life span of the landfill site can be extended. Finished compost also makes an excellent soil amendment which will be made available for our park areas and distribution to the public in the spring.
How to use the compost facility
- Bag or bundle your yard wastes the way you would normally do in spring through to fall.
- Bring yard wastes to the compost collection areas located in (west of the Public Service Shop).
- Please read signs to place all items in the appropriate piles.
For example, if grass clippings are brought to the facility in a plastic bag, empty the clippings in the Yard Clippings (Grass & Leaves) pile. The plastic bag can either be taken home and used again or placed in the garbage bin for disposal.
- The facility is not a dumping station for garbage. Dumping of garbage at the compost facility is illegal and adds to the operational costs.
- It is illegal to remove any compost material from the composting facility.
