Firefighter Recruitment Basic Requirements:
Position Summary:
The City of Leduc firefighter works in a compositely integrated staffing model consisting of career, and paid on firefighters. Under general supervision, the firefighter responds to emergent fire and rescue calls. The firefighter will also respond to medical incidents and dependant on level of training, will utilize basic and/or advanced life support interventions. The firefighter also provides support functions’ including maintenance of fire and ems apparatus, equipment and station, record keeping, reporting duties, participates in fire preplanning, fire inspections, public relations and training activities.
Duties and Responsibilities:

Responds to emergency calls, lays and connects hose, holds nozzles and directs water streams, raises and climbs ladders, ventilates buildings, uses positive pressure fans, uses extinguishers and other equipment

Responds to medical emergencies in an ambulance as a FF/EMT-A or an FF/EMT-P

Drives and operates firefighting and medical apparatus as assigned

Provides first responder to medical and hazardous materials incidents

Performs salvage and overhaul operations

Uses vehicle extrication tools for removal of person(s)

Employs appropriate PPE and accountability and performs all scene activities in a safe manner

Attends on and off site training sessions as required

Performs general, vehicle, equipment checks and maintenance

Documents general, vehicle, equipment checks and maintenance

Ensures that all equipment is fully prepared and functional after all calls

Performs general station duties including upkeep of fire station, cleaning of bay floor, general quarters, apparatus and equipment, washing, hanging and drying of hose, washing, cleaning of apparatus and equipment

Performs administrative documents, reporting and incident data entry

Responsible for workplace safety as outlined in the Alberta OH&S Act, employs organizational policies, procedures and guidelines

Prepares various reports and other documents

May perform other related duties as assigned
Qualifications:
Minimum education, training and experience-
Successfully complete recruiting process

18 years of age at date of hire

Possess excellent interpersonal, public relations and verbal/written communication skills

Be an excellent fit with the culture of the department

Ability to work independently and in a cooperative team environment

Have basic computer skills

High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalency

Class 5 drivers license
-
Class 4 drivers license (career)

Q endorsement (career)

Drivers abstract with no more than 6 demerits

Hold current certification as an EMT-A or EMT-P (Career)

Current certification in ACLS, IHTLS or PHTLS (Career)

NFPA 10-01 Level I (Career)
Working Conditions:
The firefighter will have to respond to emergencies and as such may come in contact with poisonous, flammable, or explosive gases and chemicals, as well as radioactive or other hazardous materials that may have immediate or long-term effects on their health. The firefighter may also come in contact with extremely ill patients that may have communicable illness. The work environment will require the firefighter to react quickly and remain calm under stressful situations. The firefighter must possess the stamina to perform all the functions of this position under adverse conditions. For these reasons, the position must wear protective gear appropriate to the call they are responding. The gear can be very heavy and hot. Work hours can be long and there is an on duty and on call rotation.
