Firefighter Recruitment - OSCE Test

The OSCE (Objective Structured Clinical Examination) is a form of performance based testing used to measure candidates’ clinical competence.  During an OSCE candidates are observed and evaluated as they perform a trauma and a medical scenario in which they interview, assess and treat standardized patients.  The standardized patient is an actor that will also observe and assess the interpersonal skills demonstrated by the candidate.

Each scenario is short roughly 5 minutes long with an emphasis on observing the candidates application of knowledge opposed to the recall of knowledge.  A 5 minute rapid fire question period will follow the scenario with questions that may or may not relate to the just conducted scenario.

Scenarios are graded as a pass/fail.  One reattempt is allowed if one scenario is unsuccessful.  A double fail will result in exclusion from the recruiting process

The OSCE’s will occur over a period of a weekend.  The applicant will be contacted for dates and times.

* NOTE: The firefighter recruitment process is subject to change.
