Downtown Plan

Downtown PlanThe City of Leduc is currently updating its Downtown Plan, a project which was launched in April 2010.  The downtown plan is the main document which sets the vision, goals and strategies for the redevelopment of Leduc’s downtown area. The downtown plan is being updated in response to the community’s desire for revitalized downtown, a key issue raised at the City of Leduc 2009 Community Visioning Workshop.

A steering committee comprising of 16 members, and representing a wide spectrum of community interests, will be updating the downtown plan. These members include:

  • Downtown residents
  • Downtown property owners and businesses
  • Public member-at-large
  • City councilors and administration
  • Leduc Downtown Progress Association
  • Leduc Chamber of Commerce
  • Leduc-Nisku Economic Development Authority

While creating the downtown plan, the steering committee will be considering a variety of topics and strategic policies for the downtown area, ranging from zoning and streetscape design to housing and economic development.

A downtown plan open house kick-off was hosted at the Leduc City Centre to launch the project in April 2010. Around 30 community members attended the open House to learn about the project and provide initial comments about downtown. Steering committee applications were circulated at the event, and then submitted to city council for approval. For this project, every application for membership which was submitted to the city was approved by council.

A downtown plan community workshop was hosted at Telford House in Leduc in early June 2010. Forty-three participants attended the workshop which was facilitated by Kim Ghostkeeper from Alberta Culture & Community Spirit. Participants worked in teams to explore how downtown should look and feel should in 25 years time. The information gathered from the workshop will help give the steering committee direction as they begin drafting the downtown plan.
