Intermunicipal Development Plan
An Intermunicipal Development Plan (IDP) is a statutory municipal policy plan, enforced by provincial regulations and prepared by neighbouring municipalities. The main purpose of an IDP is to ensure that development within two or more municipalities reflects the mutual and individual interests of the municipalities involved. An IDP will often focus on boundary areas between rural and urban municipalities.
The City of Leduc – Leduc County Intermunicipal Development Plan deals with future land uses and other matter relating to physical, social, and economic development within the IDP area. The IDP also includes procedures for the implementation of the IDP policies, dispute resolution, and amending the IDP.
The Capital Region Board approved the City of Leduc – Leduc County Intermunicipal Development Plan on October 4, 2011. That approval was followed by a Joint Public Hearing of Leduc City Council and Leduc County Council on November 15, 2011. Leduc City Council gave final approval to the IDP on November 28, 2011, and Leduc County Council gave final approval to the IDP on January 24, 2012.
To understand and better prepare for growth in the Leduc region, the City of Leduc and Leduc County developed a Joint Sustainable Growth Study in 2008. The purpose of the Joint Sustainable Growth Study was to identify the growth pressures and land requirements for growth in the Leduc area, and to determine where growth would be most feasible based on such factors as infrastructure, sustainable growth principles and economic development pressures.
