Skating and Hockey Ice Surfaces

ATTENTION: As of March 8, 2012, please be advised that all outdoor ice surfaces are closed, with the exception of the Kinsmen outdoor rink.

There will be 14 ice surfaces this year.

  • 8 casual skate, no hockey nets
  • 6 with hockey nets plus the boarded Kinsmen Rink
  • Each surface will have a picnic table and a garbage can
  • Parking will be made available at most surfaces, some will require parking on the street
  • The surfaces will be ready after 2-3 weeks of consistent below zero day time temperatures
  • Updates on ice surface conditions will be provided by the parks department. This can include temporary closures, or which ones are cleared after major snow events
  • After major snow events the ice surfaces will be cleared as staff and equipment are available. The Multiways and city buildings take priority over the ice surface maintenance

Storm Retention Ponds

All City Operated Storm Retention Facilities will be signed:
Warning Storm Water Pond Closed City of Leduc Parkland Bylaw No. 689-2007

Why skating will no longer be permitted on storm retention facilities:

  • Storm retention facilities have fluctuating water levels with potential depths that will not freeze solid
  • There have been incidences of children falling through the ice in areas, even when ice measurements at the facility are at acceptable thicknesses
  • The City of Leduc is following the lead of other municipalities, like Edmonton and Spruce Grove

Due to this closure, if Enforcement Services witnesses people on the storm water ponds, they will require people to leave or enforce fines.

Alexandra Park Pond Exception

One exception is made for the north pond at the Civic Centre (Alexandra Park) as it'll be maintained for hockey. This exception is due to many factors, such as water depth can be controlled, better accessibility for monitoring and maintenance, and the pond is more likely to freeze solid.
