Leduc Fire asks citizens not to ‘butt out’ in flower planters. Fire officials raise alarm over increase in fires caused by cigarette butts

Leduc Fire Services has responded to a number of fires related to the inappropriate disposal of cigarette butts in flower planters.

“We’re asking residents to be cautious when smoking around flower planters and never use them as ashtrays,” says Fire Chief Ernie Polsom. “Planters contain peat which can smolder from a cigarette for hours and then erupt into a fire causing serious damage, injury and even death.”

Safety tips

  • Smoke outside and use ashtrays with a wide, stable base that won’t tip over. You can also use a metal container with sand
  • Always make sure cigarettes and ashes are out
  • Soak cigarette butts and ashes in water before throwing them away

What not to do

  • Never toss hot cigarette butts or ashes into the trash
  • Never use a flower planter as an ashtray

Help keep your home and neighbourhood safe

  • Discard any dead plants in pots in and around your home
  • Keep your plants watered and maintained
  • If you keep potting soil in your garage or on your deck, don’t leave it near any combustible material
