Leduc's Civic Flower
The Daylily:
The Daylily, Leduc’s civic flower, is an inspired choice. Daylilies are described as hardy perennials with showy blooms. What better plant to represent our community. Consider our past. The Daylily reflects the hardy people who came to this area, took root and continued to thrive year after year, surviving long cold winters and the hot dry years of the Great Depression.
The Daylily is adaptable and grows easily. Leduc citizens adapted to a variety of changes over the years including the ups and downs of turbulent economic times. A “can do” attitude allows Leducians old and new to transplant themselves and grow with the community.
Blooms of the Daylily are diverse in colour and form. This reflects our growing community diversity be it age, culture, education or economics and our awareness and concern for all citizens and their quality of life.
Daylily flowers are described as showy. Large trumpet like flowers open on tall straight stems. Although we don’t like to brag we think Leduc is a pretty showy place and we are proud of the community’s beauty- our historic downtown, lovely parks, civic buildings and smiling faces.
One last fact about Daylilies is implicit in the plant’s name. Each bloom opens for only a day to be followed by another bloom the next day. This reflects a special aspect of our community and our spirit of volunteerism. People get involved, share their special abilities and then willingly stand aside and encourage others to bloom.
Adaptable, a hardy perennial, easy to grow with diverse, showy flowers- the Daylily is a perfect choice for Leduc’s civic flower.
