Attainable Housing Defined

It is common for us to think of attainable housing as emergency shelters or temporary housing. In fact, both are options from a full spectrum of attainable housing solutions. Different types of attainable housing offer different levels of support, ranging from low level support to high level support models.

Affordable Housing (Low Level Support) - Long-term housing that is provided slightly below market value. This type of housing can be in the form of rental or homeownership opportunity. Examples include rental accommodations at 10% below market and Habitat for Humanity homeownership opportunities.

Supportive Housing (Medium Level Support) - Long-term, rental, accommodations that provide on-going supportive services. In some cases, financial support in the form of subsidized housing. For otherssupportive housing includes long-term care similar to services provided in nursing homes and care for the disabled facilities. There are currently 326 supportive housing units in Leduc, 211 units are for seniors.

Transitional Housing (Medium-High Level Support) - Temporary housing, up to a maximum of 3 years, provides supportive services designed to assist residents in becoming self-sufficient. Examples include dextox centres and second stage housing for families escaping abuse. Currently, there are no transitional housing options avaiable in Leduc.

Emergency Shelters (High Level Support) - Temporary accommodations,  to a maximum of 6 months and on a walk-in basis, provides high level support in emergency situations. In many cases, meals and support services are also provided. Currently, there are no emergency shelter options available in Leduc.
