Nov. 9, 2023 Update: Residential street sweeping is now complete.

Spring street sweeping starts when the snow and ice has completely melted off the roads and temperatures allow for consistent use of the dust control water spray nozzles. Spring sweeping allows for removal of the sand mixture used throughout winter, which helps to ensure commuter safety and prevents the material from accumulating in stormwater facilities such as catch basins and retention ponds.

Fall street sweeping starts when summer comes to an end and leaves begin to cover the streets. Fall sweeping clears the dust, twigs and leaves from the road before the first snowfall, making road surfaces safe and clean for residents throughout winter and into the following spring season. This clean-up also prevents the stormwater system from becoming clogged during the spring melt.

Priority is given to the main arterial and collector roadways, followed closely by residential street sweeping. City crews monitor the condition of our streets along with the weather forecast to determine when residential sweeping will begin.

*Seasonal parking bans will not be in effect for Spring or Fall Street Sweeping

Note, this schedule may be impacted by vehicle maintenance or weather.

FAQs

What is the purpose of street sweeping?

Street sweeping clears the salt, sand, garbage and rock crush left behind from winter and hidden in the snow and ice. Cleaning the road surfaces makes it safer for motorists and pedestrians, as well as prevents the material from entering our stormwater system or clogging catch basins.

When does street sweeping begin?

Street sweeping begins as soon as the snow begins to melt off the streets in early spring. Priority is given to the main arterial and collector roadways followed by residential. Residential street sweeping usually doesn’t occur until overnight temperatures are consistently above freezing to allow for dust suppression water.

What is the difference between an arterial road and a collector road?

  • Arterial roads are major roadways used to transverse the City. They tend to be two or more lanes and have a higher volume of traffic (50 St., Black Gold Drive, etc.) Parking is not normally allowed on an arterial roadway.
  • Collector roads are roads typically used to transverse neighbourhoods connecting residential roads to arterials. Parking is normally allowed on a collector roadway. Note: crews clear residential collector roadways first with residential streets following so that residents have somewhere to park their vehicles during each sweep.

What is the residential street sweeping schedule?

Residential street sweeping follows a similar schedule to snow removal where initial neighbourhoods cleaned during the first sweep flip to become the last areas completed during the second sweep in the fall.

How long does street sweeping take?

The amount of time it takes to street sweep the city is dependent on the weather. Typically, resident sweeping requires a few weeks, while arterial and collectors are ongoing through spring, summer and fall.
