Temporary fluoride interruption to water services

Wednesday, September 4, 2019

The City of Leduc receives its water from EPCOR’s E.L. Smith Water Treatment Plant in Edmonton. To accommodate construction at the plant, EPCOR will temporarily stop adding fluoride to water from the plant. This means that water provided to City of Leduc utility customers won’t contain fluoride during EPCOR’s construction.

Reason for the fluoride interruption
EPCOR is upgrading a Water Treatment Plant to improve capacity and continue to deliver great tasting, quality water. While they complete these upgrades there will be a temporary interruption in the E.L. Smith Water Treatment Plant fluoridation system. The interruption takes effect immediately and will last for approximately seven months.

What should I do?
Alberta Health Services (AHS) has recommended using a fluoridated toothpaste and scheduling a regular dental checkup during the temporary interruption. AHS always recommends eating healthy foods that are low in sugar to help fight against cavities and other dental health issues.

Is water without fluoride safe to drink?
During this temporary interruption the water is perfectly safe to drink. There will be no change in taste or colour, the only difference will be the absence of fluoride providing additional dental health benefits.
