City of Leduc event finalist for Sustainable Sport Event of the Year
The City of Leduc is a finalist for the Canadian Sport Tourism Alliance’s “Sustainable Sport of the Year” PRESTIGE Award. The City received nod for the Alberta Summer Games (ASG), held in 2016.
Twenty-four finalists drawn from seven provinces and 20 communities across Canada were considered for the 2017 PRESTIGE Awards, falling into a range of categories. To be nominated for the award, the City of Leduc Sport Tourism was required to demonstrate how the outcomes of the ASG associated with three dimensions of sustainability: environmental stewardship, social inclusion and responsibility, and economic development.
A Sport Tourism Economic Assessment Model (STEAM) Economic Impact Assessment conducted indicated the ASG initiated:
- $1.0+ million in direct visitor spending
- Supported $1.5million in wages and salaries in Leduc
- Generated 34 jobs locally
- Caused a $4.9 million boost to the provincial GDP
- Supported $10.1 million in economic activity in Alberta
- Supported $1.7 million in taxes across Canada
“The biggest legacy generated by the ASG are the solar panels situated on the top of the Leduc Recreation Centre, which also provides the greatest economic contribution to the community,” says Janet Guthrie, City of Leduc Sports Tourism Coordinator. “Being able to ensure strong environmental stewardship and sustainability not only for today’s residents, but for future generations to come is something that the City of Leduc is proud of.”
The other finalists for the Sustainable Sport Event of the Year include Best of the West Gymnastics Fest (Richmond, BC) and FINA World Swimming Championships 2016 (Windsor, ON). Winners will be announced March 21, 2017, during the 11th annual PRESTIGE Awards gala luncheon at the annual Sport Events Congress in Ottawa.
