Family-owned grocer wins Sport Event Sponsor of the Year
Alberta independent grocer, Freson Bros., was recognized at the 12th annual Canadian Sports Tourism Alliance (CSTA) Prestige awards for their contributions to the 2017 Canadian Ringette Championships in Leduc. As title sponsor of the championships hosted last spring at the Leduc Recreation Centre, Freson Bros. was awarded Event Sponsor of the Year during CSTA’s Sport Event Congress in Halifax, NS on March 8.
The company was applauded for their active involvement in the event and going beyond the traditional role of an event sponsor. Their many notable contributions included assisting the event’s organizing committee in generating a $170,000 legacy fund that was donated to local groups and clubs responsible for organizing the championships.
“It’s through the generosity of businesses like Freson Bros. that Leduc is able to maintain its reputation as a leader in Sports Tourism,” says Leduc Mayor Bob Young. “Their invaluable efforts are the reason why our city can continue to offer high-caliber sporting events that highlight our talented athletes on a local and national stage.”
The 2017 Canadian Ringette Championships brought nearly 48 teams to Leduc to compete for the national champion title in U16 and U19 categories as well as the National Ringette League. Hosted in a different Canadian municipality each year, the tournament provides athletes the opportunity to compete at an elite level, encourages sportsmanship and increases the visibility of ringette across the country.
“Feeling connected and like you are part of something big is always fulfilling, and we are extensively proud to have been involved with this event activation,” say local Freson Bros. owners, Mike and Gloria Lovsin. “It was an extreme pleasure being involved with the Canadian Ringette Championships and sets a high standard for future activations of this nature for us.”
