Family violence is a human issue, not a gender issue

Tuesday, September 5, 2017

Family violence in the workplace is this year’s theme for Leduc’s third annual charity fundraiser Breakfast with the Guys. This annual event brings together local and regional businesses, organizations and community leaders to help raise awareness on the effects of family violence.

“We know the effects of family violence extends beyond the front door or backyard,” says Leduc Mayor Greg Krischke. “This year’s guest speaker, Janet Riopel CEO and president of the Edmonton Chamber of Commerce, will share valuable information and tips for business owners, supervisors and co-workers to identify the signs and know what to have in place for when you’re faced with family violence in the workplace.”

According to the 2016 report by the Chief Public Health Officer ‘The State of Public Health in Canada – A Focus on Family Violence in Canada,’* family violence is defined as a complex issue that can happen at any point in a lifetime. Some of the statistics of this report include:

  • One in three Canadians (around nine million) say they’ve experienced abuse before the age of 15
  • Roughly 18 per cent of women and 8 per cent of men say they have been victims of sexual abuse as a child
  • More than 766,000 older Canadians say they had experienced abuse/neglect over a one year period

“Family violence is a much larger issue than many realize as it affects so much of our daily lives, whether it’s a co-worker, friend, relative or neighbour,” says Donna Brock, director of Family and Community Support Services with the City of Leduc. “Breakfast with the Guys is about providing awareness and education to community leaders, while raising much-needed funds to support those living with and wanting to break away from domestic abuse.”
