Official statement from Mayor Bob Young

Monday, December 10, 2018

“While I can appreciate the tax pressures that the City of Edmonton is facing when it comes to tourism and recreational facilities, I do not believe that the surrounding municipalities are responsible. Leduc, like most every other municipality in the Edmonton region, builds culture and recreation facilities with tax dollars from our residents. We know residents from outside our region will use our facilities and their user fees will go towards our operating costs.

I think that the province, as well as the surrounding municipalities, recognizes the importance of the services Edmonton provides. This is reflected in provincial funding in the Big Cities Charter, MSI grants, and with the more than $1 billion in transit grants that all Albertans’ tax dollars go towards.
I am surprised by Mayor Iveson’s comments because he is a strong champion of regional collaboration. The best place for these discussions is at the Edmonton Metropolitan Region Board table. I look forward to meeting with Mayor Iveson, and the other mayors in the region face-to-face to discuss his concerns at the next EMRB meeting and finding a path forward that is supportive of our regional growth.”
