Official statement: Mayor Young issues statement on the Humboldt Broncos

Saturday, April 7, 2018

City of Leduc Mayor Bob Young has issued the following statement regarding the tragedy involving the Humboldt Broncos:

“To the players, Broncos organization, families and friends, fans and billet families, know that the City of Leduc holds you in our thoughts and our hearts ache deeply for you. We are so sorry for the loss of the members of the team. We also wish the surviving members a strong recovery over the coming days, weeks and months.

Hockey is part of the fabric of communities across our country and many young players head off to communities as part of their passion for the sport. Leduc is no different, as such we are deeply affected by the tragic situation involving the Humboldt Broncos. Words cannot capture the magnitude of this loss but it is felt in communities where these young men were born and raised, including Leduc, which some of the Broncos have called home as a part of the Leduc Junior Athletic Club and Leduc Minor Hockey Association. While this has occurred a province away it feels so close to home.

In the midst of this tragedy there is a beacon of light in Humboldt and across Saskatchewan as communities quickly set up reception centres, delivered services for families, friends and others and provided emotional and physical support. They did what those of us who are so far away couldn’t do - embracing those immediately affected by this tragedy. To Mayor Rob Muench, we are inspired by your community's response and are here to support should you require it.

Lastly, we want to acknowledge the work done by all emergency services personnel. From those that were first on scene who witnessed the unbelievable to the medical professionals at the hospitals across Saskatchewan, thank you for everything you have done to help the victims of this tragedy. Our thoughts are with you as you process all that you witnessed. The City of Leduc is here to support in any way possible and know we are just a phone call away.”
