Renovations around the corner for Mix Family Aquatic Centre

Wednesday, May 17, 2017

The Mix Family Aquatic Centre at the Leduc Recreation Centre (LRC) will be closed for renovations beginning June 6. When the centre re-opens in fall 2017, patrons can expect an improved aquatic experience that focuses on enhanced facility safety and amenities.

Renovations scheduled for this summer conclude upgrades that began in 2016 as part of $250,000 in federal funding the City of Leduc received through the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program. The final stages of this two-year project will significantly change areas of the centre, such as the main pool basin and underground piping system, which are original components of the Black Gold Centre that was built in 1980.

"These upgrades are part of our commitment to continually improve the LRC facility and its amenities for our patrons,” states Michael Warchol, Manager of Aquatic Services at the LRC. “We strategically selected this summer to begin upgrades so that we could take advantage of Canada 150 grant funding and ensure that regular aquatic centre users would have access to the Alexandra Outdoor Pool.”

During the upgrade period, LRC members can enjoy the outdoor pool, which will be expanding its hours and programming for public swim, lap swim and aqua-fitness classes. A limited amount of summer swimming lessons will still be available; however, fall lessons at the Mix Family Aquatic Centre will be increased to accommodate higher registration numbers.

Members are invited to try the many other fitness options the LRC offers, including fitness classes, drop-in field house and arena opportunities, and much more. If members prefer swimming indoors, The LRC has also partnered with the Beaumont Aqua-Fit Centre, who will accept LRC memberships at their facility beginning June 6. Members who don’t plan on taking advantage of other offerings during the centre’s upgrades may place their membership on hold. Once the centre re-opens, the time held will be placed back onto the membership.
