People Are Not Born Angry

Violent behaviour is often modelled for us within the family, community or in the media.

Fortunately there are many things we can do to help prevent family violence. The best approach is to create and maintain healthy relationships within our environments:

  • Have a little Wayne Gretzky or Hayley Wickenheiser in the family? Get outside and play a little shinny for an hour. Better yet, invite their friends and parents out for a game. This can work for a variety of sports.
  • Most children show an interest in at least one activity so ask them to teach you how to do that activity. Actively listen to what they say to show them you care.
  • Turn off the TV during dinner and let your kids pick the topic of conversation. It might take a few dinners to get them to open up, but it’s a great way learn about their day, their feelings and what interests them.
  • Take a light-hearted approach when playing with your kids. Encourage them to guide the activity so they can have fun.
  • Spend quality time with your kids. In their eyes, your extra efforts mean the world.
