Stingrays Lifeguard Club

Stingrays is an exhilarating, educational swim club for any youth 8 years or older with Swim Kids 4 or higher swimming capability and the desire to have a terrific time in an aquatic setting. Stingrays members are encouraged to develop skills based on personal bests in swimming, lifesaving, fitness, knowledge, leadership and team work. This program provides high activity challenges in an energetic club environment both on deck and in the pool. Members may also be introduced to competitive lifesaving activities.

The 2018/19 Season has some significant changes to the club layout. Our Junior (8-12 yrs) & Senior (13-17 yrs) Sport Clubs will combine practices twice a week and our leadership program will run the opposite 2 days per week.

Junior Stingrays will have the opportunity to train alongside their older peers. Workouts & practices will be run together but with junior level activities and senior level activities.

Senior Stingrays will have an opportunity to participate in either (or both) Lifesaving Sport Club or Front-Liners Leadership Program

Lifesaving Sport Club (8 - 17 yrs)

Front-Liners (13 - 17 yrs)

Front-Liners is a new approach to leadership courses for our Stingrays participants! At the Mix Family Aquatic Centre, we truly believe everyone has leadership potential and we encourage all of our participants and visitors to LEAD FROM THE FRONT! In this program, Front-Liners will work together as a team and have tons of fun while developing leadership & lifeguarding skills from several programs – something regular leadership courses don’t build in time for. Front-Liners will have opportunities to work together in creating activities, solving problems, and working through challenges, all the while enhancing their swimming & lifesaving skills. Successful fall session Front-Liners will complete Bronze Medallion & Bronze Cross courses with extra time for fun, practice and de4velopment. Successful completion of these courses gives candidates a head-start on the pre-requisites for the Lifesaving Society National Lifeguard program.

Why did you change from the previous Stingrays model?

* Sustainability & Consistency: Using our previous model (3 different groups and practices 5 days per week) we are unable to sustain the staffing requirements to run the Stingrays program. Each group requires 2 certified coaches for a total of 6. We were unable to sustain this session to session.

* Diversity: We've identified a need for programming and engaging youth ages 8 - 12 years old. This is a time when they finish swimming lessons and before they are old enough to begin most leadership paths. The addition of the Front-Liners Program allows us to try and meet that need in a way that keeps swimmers engaged and begins them on the journey to aquatic certification.
