Wednesday, September 21, 2022

The City of Leduc hosted its annual Wild Rose Invitational at the Leduc Recreation Centre from July 29 to Aug. 1, and the City saw economic benefits of approximately $247,000.

Sport Tourism Canada used the STEAMPRO2.0 economic impact assessment model to analyze visitor data gathered by on-site surveyors to complete an Economic Impact Study. During these face-to-face surveys, data was gathered to create spending profiles of event attendees.

The Wild Rose Invitational brought 1,816 travellers from across Canada to Leduc for the four-day event. Visitors spent $334K during their time in Leduc on accommodations, dining, transportation, shopping and other recreational activities. Nearly half of all out-of-town attendees stayed overnight for approximately 2.5 nights.

The study also outlines initial expenditures (operational expenses required to put on the event) were roughly $103,000. Additionally, the event supported $151,336 in local wages and salaries.

“The City of Leduc continues to be a destination for national sporting events, and our amazing community continues to welcome visitors from coast-to-coast-to-coast with open arms and exceptional hospitality,” said City of Leduc Mayor Bob Young. “Sport tourism remains an important economic driver for the City of Leduc, and the Economic Impact Study re-affirms the positive impact hosting major events has on our community and province.”

“We are proud to support sport tourism across the country with accurate data on the impact of hosting sport events,” said Heather Bury, Chair, Sport Tourism Canada Board. “This study demonstrates once again that local competitions generate significant economic activity not only for the host community, but provincially and nationally as well.”

The study shows that the event generated more than $646,640 in overall economic impact for the province and boosted the provincial gross domestic product (GDP) by $327,274. The event also supported $128,484 in tax revenue across Canada.
