(June 19, 2025) The spill that occurred last week has been successfully cleaned up. The contaminated material from the area has been removed and no traces were found in the lake or nearby water sources. Environmental monitoring will continue over the next several days as a precaution and to confirm there are no further impacts.

(June 11, 2025) The spill is being monitored and clean up continues in the contained area. The source still remains unknown and a wider search area is being cast to determine the source.

(June 6, 2025) The City of Leduc has responded to a chemical spill near Telford Lake using absorbent materials and preventing it from entering the lake. It does not pose any immediate risk to residents, homes, or drinking water sources.

The spill, located at the 46 Street culvert, was reported to the City by a surveyor on June 4. City crews were quick to respond, notifying Alberta Environment and beginning containment techniques to mitigate impacts on people, property and the environment.

The source of the spill is currently unknown and is being investigated. The area has been blocked off as work continues.

What has been done so far:

  • Spill response booms and oil sorbent pads are being used as a physical barrier in front of the culvert and beneath the Trans Canada Trail Bridge;
  • Booms will remain in place until the City and Alberta Environment are confident there is no ongoing risk to Telford Lake;
  • Plans are in place to regularly replace the pads and reassess the area.
  • A hydrovac was used to help clean up the spill.

Updates will be shared as they become available.
