The City of Leduc’s Curbside Cart Collection and Recycling Program plays a vital role in diverting material from the landfill each year, helping the City meet its residential waste diversion targets.

By keeping waste out of landfills, the program reduces its environmental impact and fosters a cleaner, greener community for today and future generations.

The program is built around three waste streams:

  1. Black cart for household waste
  2. Green cart for organic materials
  3. Blue bags for recyclables

Through this system, Leduc residents actively contribute to sustainability efforts, ensuring a healthier environment and a more vibrant future for the city.

Recycle Coach

Recycle Coach, the City of Leduc’s new and improved — and free — waste sorting and collection calendar app, makes it easier than ever for residents to sort smarter.

Available on both Android and Apple platforms, Recycle Coach offers a range of features to simplify waste management. Users can access detailed sorting information to ensure items are properly recycled or disposed of, view customized collection calendars by address, and set optional reminders via phone, text, or email.

The app also includes a tool to report issues like missed collections, provides news and alerts about Leduc’s waste management programs and events, and shares essential recycling tips to keep the community informed.

Place your carts and blue bags out for collection by 7 a.m. on your collection day.

  • Curbside collection uses different trucks for each type of material and will come by at different times throughout the day.
  • Collection will be complete by 7 p.m.
  • Pull your carts in at the end of the day.
  • The carts are collected by a truck with an automated arm that requires one-metre clearance on all sides and above each cart.
  • Carts can be emptied only if the one-metre clear zone is observed.

For more information, call the Eco Smart Hotline at (780)-980-7107.

  • When your organic green cart is collected, the truck is equipped with a camera to scan for contaminants as waste is dumped in. The camera uses artificial intelligence (AI) technology to identify contaminants (e.g., plastic bags, hard plastics, etc.).
  • The City will use information collected by the AI technology to support public education about what is accepted in each waste stream (i.e., black cart, green cart, blue bag).
  • The long-term goal is to increase waste diversion and keep organic material out of the landfill.
  • This pilot program, which has been extended to the end of 2024, is an evolution of the organic cart inspection program to ensure green carts contain acceptable items.

The City of Leduc is introducing a comprehensive waste diversion program for apartment and condo properties to further reduce residential waste sent to landfills.

This initiative aligns with Alberta’s new Extended Producer Responsibility Regulation, ensuring multi-unit residents have access to the same organics and recycling services as single-family homes.

Developed with input from property owners and waste haulers, the program addresses the need for education, communication, and City support during the transition. Starting Jan. 1, 2026, Leduc’s Waste Bylaw will require all multi-unit properties to participate in organic and recycling diversion.

Resources are available to help with these changes.
