The City of Leduc is committed to preserving and enhancing a healthy ecosystem—guided by the City’s Environmental Plan—by improving green spaces to support the local biodiversity in our community. These efforts contribute to Leduc’s environmental sustainability goals while providing residents with beautiful, functional spaces for recreation and relaxation.

A variety of programs and initiatives focus on enhancing green spaces, fostering environmental stewardship, and ensuring the health of Leduc’s ecosystems for future generations.

Urban Tree Canopy

Trees are an important part of a healthy city. Leduc is working to grow and protect its urban tree canopy in parks, streets, and natural areas.

Urban tree cover helps:

  • Improve air quality by removing pollutants
  • Reduce heat in the summer and make spaces more comfortable
  • Store carbon and help fight climate change
  • Manage stormwater and reduce runoff
  • Support mental health and community well-being

The City works on increasing canopy cover across the city through initiatives like Arbour Day and the commemorative forest.

Naturalized areas

Naturalized areas are spaces where plants and trees are allowed to grow naturally. These areas help restore local ecosystems and create habitats for birds and wildlife. The natural areas are not part of the regular mowing cycle and may eventually be planted with trees, shrubs, or wildflowers.

Areas selected to be naturalized commonly surround bodies of water, along arterial roads and utility corridors, are in environmentally sensitive areas, or are near parks and locations difficult to mow. Naturalized areas better capture rainwater, reducing stormwater runoff, which will prevent overwhelming drainage systems and lower the risk of flooding.

Habitat Restoration

Habitat restoration helps repair areas that have been disturbed or changed over time. This includes wetlands, grasslands, and areas along rivers and creeks.

Restoration work often includes planting native species, removing invasive plants, and improving natural water flow. These efforts help rebuild healthy ecosystems and support long-term environmental sustainability.

Community Involvement

Residents play an important role in building a greener Leduc by:

  • Taking part in tree planting programs
  • Planting private gardens to support pollinators
  • Choosing sustainable options when building or renovating
