The City of Leduc is resuming planning for the West Campus recreation project, taking a responsible, long term approach grounded in years of study, assessment, and community input.

While work on the project was paused in 2024, renewed Council interest and a re examination of financial strategies are positioning the project to move forward once again.

The March 23 Committee meeting marked an important step in the learning phase of the project. Council reviewed background work completed to date, considered a proposed planning timeline and approach, and began preparing for future discussions and decisions as the project moves into its next phase.

Providing high quality recreation facilities is a core municipal service, and long term planning for West Campus began several years ago. Since 2017, the City has completed extensive background work to understand community needs and future growth pressures. This work has included demographic analysis, facility utilization studies, community engagement, benchmarking, and a comprehensive Recreation Facility Needs Assessment and Development Strategy, both completed in 2023.

This foundational work identified current and emerging gaps in Leduc’s recreation system and explored potential amenities and development options for the West Campus site.

Proposed Project Timeline

  • Concept design and site planning: 2026–2027
  • Community input: early 2027
  • Council decision to proceed: 2027
  • Detailed design: 2027
  • Construction is anticipated to begin: 2028 (2–3 years to complete)

At this stage, no decisions have been made regarding specific amenities, facility designs, or final concepts. Council is entering a period of learning and discussion to ensure future decisions are informed, deliberate, and aligned with community needs.

By taking a measured and informed approach, the City is ensuring West Campus planning remains transparent and rooted in the work already completed — laying a strong foundation for future choices when the time is right.

West Campus will be a topic on the agenda at the City Council meeting on April 13.
