Arts, Culture and Heritage Award

The Leduc Music Festival is the recipient of the 2024 Arts, Culture and Heritage Award. Established in 1976 by the esteemed Dr. Lloyd Thompson, the annual festival’s core mission is to provide a platform for students in the community to showcase their artistic talents. The festival blends performance, competition and adjudication to allow students to gain invaluable experience and receive insightful feedback.

In its first years, the festival was limited to piano classes, but it soon began to grow and today features categories ranging from piano and instrumental to speech arts, vocal, choral and band. Its largest year included 1,400 registrants. Performers register in their chosen classes and compete in a supportive environment, receiving constructive feedback from adjudicators. The most proficient performers receive scholarships and cash awards, and select participants are nominated to represent Leduc at the provincial level each year.

The festival’s largest and longest-running sponsor is the Nisku-Leduc Rotary Club, and the volunteers who dedicate their time and efforts to running the festival put in countless hours organizing all aspects of the event, from managing registrations, hiring adjudicators and booking venues to finding sponsors and organizing an annual awards gala. Committed to encouraging young performers, collaborating with world-class adjudicators and fostering an appreciation for the performing arts, the Leduc Music Festival plays a major role not only in the development of young artists, but also in the development of Leduc as a vibrant community.
