Community safety is one of our top priorities. Residents are encouraged to review the following community tips to help make our city safe.

While a storm pond adds a scenic natural space to your neighbourhood, their purpose is to collect runoff water. Due to the constant flow of water and unpredictable water levels, they are not safe for recreational use. This includes skating or walking on the ice in the winter, and swimming, wading and boating in the summer. Please keep a close eye on pets as well, to keep them off the ice and out of the ponds.

In the winter, ice forms in unstable conditions and is often very thin. Therefore, skating or walking on the ice is strictly prohibited. Instead, residents can enjoy and safely use one of Leduc’s outdoor ice surfaces.

Help keep your neighbours safe during the winter season by clearing your sidewalks within 48 hours of the most recent snowfall. Clean sidewalks reduce the risk of slips and falls. Residents unable to clear their sidewalks within the 48-hour window set by the Community Standards Bylaw could receive a fine of $100. Are you able to offer a helping hand? Become a snow angel in your community and help your neighbours who could use an extra hand in snow removal.

If you’re planning to ride your bike and explore the multiway, remember to:

  • Wear a helmet
  • Be visible with bright, reflective clothing, and front/rear bike lights
  • Stay alert, avoid distractions, watch out for other trail users and obstacles, slow down for blind spots
  • Regularly inspect the bell, brakes, tires, chain, and gears
  • Adjust your speed to accommodate for the trail conditions, traffic volume, and weather
  • Ride predictably and ring your bell. Pass on the left.

Students are typically in school from September to June each year. Please slow down and watch out for children as you enter a school zone. The speed limit is 30 km/h in the area every school day from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Motorists entering playground zones can also expect to slow down to 30 km/h every day from 8:30 a.m. to 1 hour past sunset. School and playground zones are all marked with signage in the City of Leduc.

The holiday season is a time of celebration for many. If you are heading to a party, make sure to plan a safe way home. Appoint a designated driver or call a cab or another transportation option.

Pet Safety and Public Parks

Leduc has three off-leash dog parks:

We know pets are part of the family. Help keep them safe by ensuring they are leashed when you leave your property. According to the city’s Animal Licensing and Control Bylaw, the leash cannot be more than two metres in length. This helps to stop your pet from running too far off into traffic or chasing after other animals. Please also respect your neighbours and be a considerate pet owner by picking up after your pet.

Unsightly Properties

Unsightly properties that show signs of neglect can pose a crime and fire risk to your home and your neighbours.

According to the Leduc Community Standards Bylaw, property owners are to keep lawns trimmed at or below 10 cm and remove any debris build-up visible from neighbouring locations. Signs of neglect include long grass, weeds, derelict vehicles, debris, and some buildings in a state of disrepair.
