As we head into spring and summer, many residents are enjoying time outside—starting up barbeques and smokers, gathering around fire pits, and exploring Leduc’s multiway trail system. With more outdoor activity comes a shared responsibility to help reduce the risk of fires. A few small actions can make a big difference in keeping our neighbourhoods safe throughout the season:
Yard and property maintenance
- Prune trees and shrubs
- Keep grass trimmed
- Clear roofs and gutters of leaves and debris
- Remove dry material from under decks and away from buildings
Safe disposal of smoking materials
- Always place cigarette buts in fire-safe containers
- Never drop them in planters or toss them onto the ground
Equipment and vehicle awareness
- Clear dry grass and debris away from the hot exhaust of vehicles, ATVs and yard equipment
- Use extension cords only as temporary, short-term power sources and replace any cords that are frayed, cracked or overheating
- Follow all manufacturer instructions for charging, storing and using batteries
Fire pits
- Ensure your fire pit meets all Fire Services Bylaw requirements
- Keep water or a fire extinguisher close at hand
- Never leave a fire unattended
- Fully extinguish fires—do not let them burn out on their own
Stay informed
- Fire advisories, restrictions or bans may be issued as conditions change
- None are in place right now, but residents are encouraged to monitor Leduc.ca and the City’s social media channels for updates throughout the season.
