Several key recreation amenities — a fieldhouse, twin arena, climbing gym and multi-use program space — have been identified as the top priorities for the West Campus project, following City Council’s review of amenity options on May 4.

“Leduc has grown significantly in recent years and while we know that growth isn’t slowing down, West Campus will help prepare us for the community that Leduc is becoming,” says Lars Hansen, Mayor of the City of Leduc. “We want to ensure people of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities can see themselves reflected in the spaces we build. This is about investing thoughtfully in a community that works for everyone, now and in the future.”

Major amenities for the project were prioritized into two phases: a field house with unboarded turf and twin arena in Phase 1, and an aquatics centre in Phase 2. A decision about whether a gymnasium will be incorporated into West Campus Phase 2 has not yet been determined while the City considers if this amenity could be addressed at the Leduc Recreation Centre instead.

Supplemental amenities, which are lower cost features that add flexibility and user experience, were also prioritized. During facility design, Administration will attempt to incorporate as many supplemental amenities as possible into Phase 1 planning, based on Council’s prioritization and costs. The remaining supplemental amenities are expected to be incorporated into Phase 2.

*Council identified a wraparound track as a priority for Phase 1 and a more recreational track for walking (or “meandering”) in Phase 2.

The West Campus project is intended to help address Leduc’s future recreation needs and responds to anticipated long-term growth pressures, changing participation patterns, and capacity pressures on existing facilities.

The amenity prioritization was informed by several years of background work, including recreation facility needs assessments, utilization and benchmarking studies, demographic analysis, and earlier community engagement.

Administration will now begin the next stage of planning by developing facility concepts and site layout options for Council consideration. This work will help clarify what each amenity in Phase 1 could look like, and provide a more detailed estimate of construction, operating, and long-term maintenance costs.

Facility designs are expected to return to City Council for consideration in Fall 2026. The public will be invited to provide input on facility designs in early 2027.
