October 4 to 10 is Fire Prevention Week, and Leduc Fire Services is encouraging residents to learn how simple charging habits can help prevent fires at home.

This year’s National Fire Prevention Association (NFPA) Fire Prevention Week theme,“Charge Into Fire Safety: Safe Charging Is a Superpower,” focuses on the safe use and charging of lithium-ion batteries found in everyday devices such as phones, tablets, laptops, power tools, e-bikes and scooters.

While lithium-ion batteries power many of the devices we rely on every day, damaged batteries or improper charging can increase the risk of fire. Residents are encouraged to follow these key safety tips:

  • Use the charger and cord that came with your device or one approved by the manufacturer.
  • Charge devices on a hard, flat surface, not on beds, couches or under pillows.
  • Unplug devices when they are fully charged.
  • Stop using a device if it becomes very hot, swells, smokes, or gives off an unusual smell.
  • Charge larger battery-powered items, such as e-bikes and scooters, outside when possible and away from exits.

“Fire Prevention Week is a reminder that small actions can make a big difference when it comes to keeping your family safe,” says Bryan Singleton, Fire Chief, City of Leduc. “By understanding the risks associated with lithium-ion batteries and following safe charging practices, residents can help reduce the risk of fires in their homes.”

In addition to practicing safe charging habits, Leduc Fire Services encourages residents to:

  • Test smoke and carbon monoxide alarms monthly and change the batteries every six months.
  • Replace smoke and carbon monoxide alarms according to manufacturer recommendations.
  • Develop and practice a home fire escape plan with everyone in the household.
  • Ensure everyone knows two ways out of each room whenever possible.

Fire Prevention Week is observed across North America each year to help raise awareness about fire risks and how to stay safe. The City of Leduc regularly shares fire prevention information and resources on Leduc.ca and its social media channels (Facebook, Instagram).
