Leduc improves road safety with a Road Weather Information Station

The one-year pilot will help determine the suitability of the device with current City operations. If suitable, the City will consider additional RWIS devices in other strategic locations. The pilot underscores Leduc’s commitment in investing in innovative solutions to improve municipal services.

“The road weather information station will allow our crews to harness the power of technology to make informed decisions,” says Rick Sereda, City of Leduc Director of Public Services. “We can streamline our ability to mitigate the impact of adverse weather conditions and ensure all motorists a safe journey to their destination.”

How it works:

• The RWIS is a solar and battery powered device that has an infrared system and camera to read surface and air temperature, dew point and humidity.
• Alerts are set for certain weather patterns that can cause hazardous road conditions (freezing ice, heavy snowfall, etc.) where City operators are notified in advance.
• Operators can remotely check conditions and determine the level of response to mitigate risks.

Driving conditions will be improved for motorists as crews will be able to proactively clear snow or sand roads ahead of peak travel times. Clear roads decrease the risk of motor vehicle incidents and the demand for emergency services.
