Accessibility and Green features

The LRC is designed to be a welcoming, barrier-free facility where everyone can move comfortably, participate fully, and feel they belong.

Accessibility is built into how the LRC was designed, how it operates today, and how it continues to evolve. Our goal is to ensure people of all abilities can safely and confidently enjoy everything the facility has to offer.

Built with accessibility in mind

Accessibility was a key priority from the earliest design stages of the LRC:

  • Facility plans and access points were reviewed with the Canadian Paraplegic Association, and design standards were exceeded to support universal access
  • The twin arenas were designed to meet Canadian Hockey Association sledge hockey standards, ensuring accessible routes from dressing rooms to the ice for adaptive athletes
  • In 2010, the LRC’s leadership in inclusive design was recognized with the Percy Wickman Accessibility Award from the Canadian Paraplegic Association

Continued commitment to accessible spaces

Accessibility is at the heart of how we plan upgrades and improvements throughout the facility. We continue to invest in equipment and infrastructure that support people of all mobility levels—removing barriers, enhancing independence, and supporting meaningful participation in recreation, sport and community life.

LRC Accessible Features

The LRC offers a wide range of accessibility features throughout the facility.

  • Sliding glass doors at East and West entrances and the Performance Arena
  • Push-button door openers at the East entrance and Twin Arena viewing area
  • Elevator access to all three levels of the facility
  • Full-service elevator to elevated seating in the Performance Arena
  • Indoor track handrails tilted to support visually impaired guests
  • Entrance ramps at the curling rink lobby and Loft Room food and beverage outlet
  • Touchless fixtures in washrooms
  • Universal washrooms located in the main corridor, along the aquatic hallway, on the second floor outside the Twin Arena viewing area, within the Aquatic Centre changeroom
  • Pool and changeroom lifts in the Aquatic Centre
  • Zero-grade access to the leisure pool and hot tub
  • PAL2 Pool Lift available in both the main pool and hot tub, featuring secure stabilizer arms, rear brakes, seatbelt use for every transfer, and compliance with leading accessibility and safety standards
  • TotDock Platform used during lessons to increase standing height for young or shorter swimmers
  • Wheelchair friendly fitness equipment
  • Rubberized flooring in fieldhouses
  • Fully accessible Twin Arenas for adaptive ice sports
  • Accessible accommodations for wheelchair curling and other adaptive participants in the curling rink

Environmental sustainability at the LRC

The City of Leduc is committed to building environmentally sustainable facilities, and the LRC was designed with long-term efficiency in mind.

  • Pool roof replacement and increased insulation value (R-value from 7 to 20) to reduce heat loss
  • Solar installations completed in 2016
  • REALice Technology implemented to use lower water temperatures for ice resurfacing, create harder / smoother ice, reduce ice maintenance needs, lower greenhouse gas emissions, and reduce natural gas and electricity use
  • Performance Arena ice plant upgraded in 2015, delivering an estimated 15% energy savings
  • Cooling tower upgraded in the Twin Arenas to reduce water consumption
  • EcoChill and Enviro Ice heat recovery systems provide: domestic hot water, under-slab heating in changerooms and fieldhouses, perimeter heating near windows, snow-melt heating at building entrances, and dehumidification in ice areas
  • T5, staged lighting in arenas and fieldhouses (30%, 60%, or 100% lighting levels)
  • Metal halide lighting in the Performance Arena and Curling rink were replaced with energy efficient T5 high-bay fluorescent lighting
  • All other lighting upgraded to LED
  • Low-flush toilets and waterless urinals installed throughout the facility
  • Accessible bottle refill stations to reduce single-use plastic waste
  • EV charging stations in the East parking lot, including Level 2 and Level 3 chargers, powered by on-site solar energy
  • Active energy audits will identify additional opportunities for energy savings and sustainability improvements.
