As students and teachers head back to school this week, motorists are reminded that the speed limit on residential streets is 40 km/hour and all local school zones are 30 km/hour on school days from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

“Thank you to everyone who drives with care at or below the posted speed limit,” says City of Leduc Mayor Bob Young. “Safe speeds go a long way to making Leduc’s neighbourhoods safer and quieter for all and is especially important to keep in mind during the back-to-school season as both driver and pedestrian traffic increases.”

“Road safety is a shared responsibility. Do your part this back-to-school season to make sure students and adults get where they’re going safely,” says Constable Cheri-Lee Smith, Leduc RCMP Community Policing.

Additional back-to-school driving safety tips:

  • Pay attention at intersections and crosswalks
  • Watch for pedestrians and obey all traffic signs and signals
  • Keep an eye out for school buses, their stop arms and flashing lights
  • Never pass a bus that has stopped to let students on or off. When a bus is stopped, leave enough room between your vehicle and the bus to allow students to safely cross the street.
