A new place to remember at the K-9 Off-Leash Park

There’s a new spot in Leduc’s K-9 Off-Leash Park where pawprints will now linger long after beloved pets have gone.

The Rainbow Memorial Bridge (inspired by a Rainbow Bridge poem) is a dedicated space where pet owners can honour and remember their cherished companions who have gone.

Pet owners are welcome to leave a collar on the bridge as a personal memorial and tribute to a companion who has passed. These mementos tell stories of love, friendship, walks, games, and snuggles that fill a life shared with an animal.

To keep the space beautiful and welcoming for all, collars and other memorial items will be inspected annually in January and respectfully removed if needed.

The Rainbow Memorial Bridge stands as a testament to what community spirit can create. Donated by members of the community, the bridge came to life through shared compassion and dedication.

Next to the bridge, a memorial bench invites visitors to sit, reflect, and perhaps share a story or two about a friend who left pawprints on their heart. Whether you’re remembering your first pet or simply taking a quiet moment during a walk, the bench offers a spot to rest and reflect.

“The idea for the memorial bench and bridge came from wanting to create a place where joy and remembrance can meet—a spot where people can enjoy happy memories of their loved pet,” said Patty Blais and Danielle Beeson, residents who coordinated the project. “The bridge symbolizes the connection between people and their pets, a peaceful place to pause and remember their spirit. The bench is dedicated to Claire; a service dog who helped so many in their time of need and gave light and hope in some of their darkest times.”

The next time you visit the K-9 Off-Leash Park, take a moment to stroll by the bridge or sit on the bench. If you’ve ever said goodbye to a beloved pet, know this bridge was built for you: a place to grieve, to remember, and to smile at the joy they brought to your life.
