NestWatch Project Committee

The 2025 recipient of the Environmental Achievement Award is the NestWatch Project Committee with the Leduc Wildlife Conservation Society (LWCS). The LWCS has been a dedicated environmental steward in the community for more than 10 years, promoting conservation, education and appreciation for local wildlife and natural habitats. In 2025, LWCS joined the Cornell Lab of Ornithology’s NestWatch program, an innovative volunteer-driven initiative focused on supporting and monitoring local bird populations through the installation and observation of nesting boxes for tree swallows, mountain bluebirds, wrens and ducks.

Led by a passionate team of volunteers, the project combines environmental stewardship with scientific research and community engagement. Volunteers constructed and installed 41 nesting boxes around Telford Lake and dedicated more than 100 hours to monitoring nesting activity, collecting data and maintaining the sites throughout the season.

By participating in the NestWatch program, LWCS contributed valuable local data to an international research database used by scientists studying bird populations and migration trends across North America. The project has also attracted recognition from environmental organizations across Alberta, highlighting Leduc as a community committed to wildlife conservation and sustainable stewardship for future generations.
