Water Restrictions

Water restrictions are staged actions the City use to help manage water use when the water system is under pressure. They help protect safe drinking water, firefighting capacity, and other essential community services.

The measures are outlined in the City’s Water Bylaw and apply to City operations and all water users in Leduc. They are implemented in stages, from early monitoring to voluntary reductions to mandatory restrictions.

The City may use water restrictions during hot, dry weather, high water use, maintenance, equipment issues, or other system needs. Acting early helps reduce strain on the regional water system and helps avoid more serious restrictions later.

You may be asked to use water wisely, reduce non-essential water use, or stop non-essential water use until the measure changes or ends.

If a measure is active, follow the actions listed below.

Examples of non-essential water use

Non-essential water use may include:

  • Watering lawns.
  • Washing vehicles, driveways, sidewalks, or buildings.
  • Filling pools, hot tubs, ponds, or decorative fountains.
  • Using sprinklers for play.
  • Other outdoor uses that can be delayed.

Essential water use for health, safety, sanitation, and basic household needs may continue.

How to prepare before restrictions are needed

  • Follow the City’s channels and sign up for the City’s e-newsletter, Leduc Link.
  • Fix leaky taps, toilets, hoses, and irrigation systems.
  • Run dishwashers and washing machines only with full loads.
  • Water lawns and gardens less often.
  • Delay non-essential outdoor cleaning.

Water Restriction Stages

FAQs

Water restrictions are about managing supply and demand. If there is a water quality concern, the City will share separate instructions (most likely through the Alberta Emergency Alert system).

Restrictions help reduce pressure on the water system so there is enough water for drinking, hygiene, firefighting, and other essential needs.

The City will use broadcast channels, like the website and social media, to alert residents if the stage changes. We will also work with our local media partners to help keep you informed.

Measure C means mandatory water restrictions are in effect. Residents and businesses must stop non-essential water use until restrictions are lifted or changed.

If required, mandatory restrictions can be enforced under the City’s Water Bylaw.

The City is a member of the Capital Region Southwest Water Services Commission (CRSWSC) that purchases water from Epcor and oversees its distribution to the Leduc region.
