Fire safety begins with you

Fire prevention and safety is important for residents and businesses because fire safety begins with you. Knowing how to prepare your house and your family in case of an emergency saves lives. The best way to keep your family safe is to ensure you limit the fire hazards in your home or business.

"Fire prevention and safety are something households and businesses should be mindful of year-round,” said City of Leduc Fire Chief Brian Singleton. “Kitchen fires are the leading cause of house fires and can become out of control very quickly so we’re asking all Leduc residents to review our kitchen safety tips to learn about how they can keep those around them safe.”

Annually, the City of Leduc acknowledges Fire Prevention Week during October and shares fire prevention and safety tips. This year’s Fire Prevention Week theme is “Cooking safety starts with YOU. Pay attention to fire prevention.” We also invite the community to an open house at Fire Hall 2 on Oct. 14.

Not sure where to start when it comes to fire prevention? Consider the following tips

  • When deep frying your turkey this Thanksgiving, make sure you do not overfill your fryer and always have it outdoors on level ground.
  • Always keep the area around your stove clear of food scraps, loose towels, and other debris.
  • Regularly test your smoke alarms and CO detectors.
  • Firewood should be placed two metres away from your house at all times and placed under a fire blanket.
  • Only store enough firewood for two days indoors.
  • Make sure you have a Class K fire extinguisher for your kitchen, and a Class ABC fire extinguisher elsewhere in your home or business.
