Help Prevent Violence Towards Seniors
Model positive behaviour to help prevent violence towards seniors
- Build healthy relationships with seniors so they feel comfortable to report family violence.
- Know how to spot family violence against seniors. Elder abuse can be physical, sexual, emotional or psychological, financial, neglect or self-inflicted.
- Watch for sudden changes in mood, behaviour and banking activity.
- Check in with your parents or grandparents and make sure they have adequate clothing, food and hygiene.
- Be there to show a senior in your life that you care about them. Spending time together is the best way to prevent family violence against seniors.
- Remember that seniors have the right to live in safety and security and there is no excuse for abuse.
- Tell someone if you are experiencing abuse. A family member is involved in 32% of reported elder abuse cases.
