Leduc Budget 2024 Update

Monday, October 16, 2023

Budget deliberation meetings began in the City of Leduc this week and focused on the proposed 2024 budget for community funding.

The presentation, made to City Council on Oct. 16, outlined requested and recommended community funding amounts, which are considered through two streams: grants to organizations (application based) and ongoing community support.

Presentation highlights:

  • The City's Boards recommended $278,170 in funding for grants to organizations in 2024.
  • The City recommended $419,052 in ongoing community support in 2024.
  • The total recommended support to organizations through both streams combined in 2024 is $697,222. This represents an 8.8 per cent decrease from 2023.
  • The decrease primarily reflects an increasingly rigorous review and critique of new grant applications and one withdrawn application.
  • Items flagged for further debate: Royal Canadian Legion Leduc Branch 108, Leduc and District Food Bank Association, Boys and Girls Club of Leduc, Leduc Senior Centre

Grants to Organization process:

  • The City of Leduc provides aid to Leduc non-profit organizations whose activities benefit city participants or users, per the Municipal Grant Policy. Grant to Organization applications opened on March 1, 2023, and closed on May 12, 2023.
  • The applications were reviewed by the City’s Family and Community Support Services (FCSS) and Parks, Recreation and Culture (PRC) advisory boards in May and June.

Upcoming budget deliberation meetings:

This was the first budget deliberation meeting of five that will be held in Leduc between Oct. 16 and Nov. 27. Over the next six weeks, City Council will meet four more times to hear from the respective divisions within the City of Leduc.

  • Oct. 30:  Proposed budget from City Manager, Corporate Services and Finance
  • Nov. 6: Proposed budget from Infrastructure and Planning
  • Nov. 20: Proposed budget from Community and Protective Services
  • Nov. 27: Council will discuss items flagged for further debate

Following the final presentation on Nov. 27, there will be a two-week period during which residents can provide feedback on the proposed budget, and administration will make final adjustments based on City Council’s direction throughout the deliberations.

The final 2024-26 municipal budget will be presented to City Council for approval on Monday, Dec. 11.
